HOW DO HEAT PUMPS WORK?

Heat pumps have become popular in recent years as an alternative to fossil fuels and other types of energy that contribute to global warming.

A heat pump uses electricity to provide both heating and cooling, depending on requirements. They have proven to be highly efficient and on many occasions are more reliable than their traditional rivals. The heat pump installation cost in Auckland has also fallen considerably over the last few years, adding to their increased appeal.

HOW IT WORKS

A heat pump uses the same technology as an air-conditioning unit, which chills your house by using refrigerant. However, a heat pump possesses a reverse valve that allows it to heat your home too.

When it’s set in heating mode, a heat pump uses the refrigerant to actually warm your house. It does this by taking the heat from an outside source—such as the air or the ground—and then pumping it over the heat exchange surface. This causes the refrigerant to evaporate. As it evaporates, it turns into a gas.

This gas is then moved into a compressor. This increases pressure, causing its temperature to increase. As such, the initial heat that was drawn into the heat pump is increased many times over.

The heated gas now passes over the internal heat exchange surface. The heat generated can then either be blown around your rooms or used to heat a central heating system or hot water system.

This process repeats itself constantly until your home reaches the temperature you require.

HOW DOES A HEAT PUMP PROVIDE HEAT ON A COLD DAY

Naturally, a heat pump is most needed on a cold day. As it gets its heat from outside sources, you may be puzzled as to how it will work efficiently when you need it most.

Heat energy exists outside regardless of the temperature out there. Heat pumps can easily extract this heat from the air or ground, even if you’re unaware of it being there.

WHY WILL HEAT PUMPS HELP US REACH NET ZERO?

A large amount of global emissions come from how we heat our buildings. In order to reach net zero emissions, we need to switch to low-carbon heating options. Heat pumps can produce far more energy than they consume and on top of that, as electricity itself is beginning to come from more sustainable sources, even the electricity it does use is set to become cleaner.
